Sidney Coppen was born in Burrough Green (Newmarket Q2-1897 3B:503), baptised in Burrough Green on 16th May 1897, son of John and Ada
Lucy Coppen (née BYE).
1901 census...Aged 3, he was in Shop Lane, Burrough Green, with his father John COPPEN [36] bricklayer's labourer; his mother Ada L.[33]; sisters Lilian J [11] and Annie M [9], brother John V.J. [7], sister Agnes M.[5], brother William H [2] and great aunt Mary COPPEN [61]. All were born in Burrough Green except his mother Ada who was born in Dullingham 1911 census...Aged 14, tending stock on farm, he was living at Shop Lane, Burrough Green with his parents, great aunt Mary, brother William Henry, sisters Winifred Ada [9], Edith Mary [8] and Grace Evelyn [4] and brothers Frank Ambrose [7] Robert [4] and Frederick Charles [3 months]. All the new siblings were born in Burrough Green and all 12 children survived. A relative believes this to be a photograph of Sidney in 1915 |

He enlisted in Newark. As he died of his wounds it is difficult to say exactly when he was wounded, but the following may be pertinent: "On the 16th October, the 11th Battalion “relieved 9th Bn YORKSHIRE Regt in the right sector of the LEFT BRIGADE of 23rd Division. The shelling was heavy on the tracks to the front line and several casualties occurred:- Lieut J W Jackson was wounded and died of wounds next day. The relief was not complete till after midnight owing to the shelling.” On the 17th October “The Bn was warned that an attack might be made by the enemy but nothing occurred except heavy shelling on the support line throughout the day.” This was in the Zillebecke area, just south of Ypres. From 16th to 19th October 1917 the 11th Sherwood Foresters lost 26 men killed in action or died of wounds. |
